Information concerning the department
The Department of Social and Humanitarian Sciences of Lviv State Academy of Finance began its activity in 1999, according to the approval of the Academic Board of 26.01.1999 (order № 29-ОД).
The organization of the department was stipulated by the changes which occurred in social, political, humanitarian policy of Ukraine, the necessity of training specialists of finance and necessity of training specialists of finance and economics profile, who would be ruled in their activity by humanistic mode of thinking, scientific world outlook.
From the very first days of the department organization it was headed by professor Vasianovych Hryhoriy Petrovych. Kostyshyn Emiliya Ivanivna became the vice-head of the department in educational and methodic work and Poliova Zoriana Yevhenivna – in research work.
The academic staff of the department consists of 20 teachers, including: one Doctor of Pedagogics, professor, 12 candidates of science (8 of them have an academic status of docent), 6 senior teachers, 1 assistant, 2 laboratorians.

During the years of Ukraine's independence social and humanitarian sciences became:
- powerful means of forming cultural wealth and vital orientations of man;
- a leading factor of professional growth of an individual; the theory proves and the practice confirms: the deeper is the general cultural development of man, the more practical possibilities for obtaining professionalism and competence he has;
- humanitarian education is increasingly becoming a factor of state security and nation preservation.
Determining the purpose and tasks of the department activity the teachers took into account the following:
- firstly, purposes and tasks of training a highly qualified specialist of finance and economic profile and spiritually rich personality coincide, and the main thing here is the forming of a creative individual, who is capable of meeting the demands of society's dynamic development;
- secondly, it is necessary to take into consideration the problems connected with intellectualization of labour. It is stipulated not only by intensifying computerization, which leads to progressive changes in labour, but also by preserving moral and spiritual health of man;
- thirdly, professional training of specialists of finance and economic profile has its meaning only in interconnection with social and humanitarian training, as it is demanded by international division of labour, by market economy, integration and differentiation of production.
To realize these tasks the teachers of the department deliver 21 subjects at day-time and correspondence forms of education of all faculties as well as during training masters and post-graduates according to corresponding specialities. Particular role in this process belongs to the science of philosophy, which concentrates its search on the investigation of the most general laws of the development of nature, society and human thinking, on the elaboration of generalized system of the world outlook and the place of a human being in it.
The courses “The Ukrainian language”, “Office work”, “Speech model of the modern informational space”, “Scientific language culture” call for forming professional and linguistic literacy. They give possibility to learn and know the language of their motherland, to feel with heart and soul their complicity in the world culture.
Considerable place in the activity of a future specialist of finance and economics profile is occupied by aesthetic knowledge, which directs personality's consciousness on high moral activity, mutual relations coloured with the beautiful and exalted.
The study of such subjects as “Jurisprudence”, “Financial law”, “Fundamentals of the constitutional law of Ukraine”, “Economic legislation of Ukraine” and others helps a personality who has chosen financial and economic profile, to stay in “the legal framework”. The teachers also deliver such subjects as “Politology”, “Sociology”, “Culturology”, “The history of Ukraine”, “The Ukrainian language”, “Office work”, “Life safety”, “Philosophy”, “Pedagogics and philosophy”, “Jurisprudence”, “Financial law”, “Economic legislation”, “Fundamentals of civil and labour law”, “Sociological and politological course”, “Philosophy course”, “Philosophy of global problems of the modern world”, “Regional geography”, “Public relations”, “Speech model of the modern informational space”, “Scientific language culture”. Studying them students learn the system of the analysis of social and political, economic, culturological situation in the country and outside its borders.
Considering the demands, which higher education faces, as well as the demands as to improving professional training of specialists of finance and economic profile the following general theme has been chosen: “theoretical principles of teaching social and humanitarian subjects in higher schools of finance and economic profile”, according to which the teachers of the department work at improving educational process and methods of teaching social and humanitarian subjects.

Since the time of its foundation the teachers have been working at such scientific themes:
“Theoretical and methodical principles of teaching the subjects of social and humanitarian cycle at higher schools of financial and economic profile”, “Spiritual and cognitive, scientific and methodical supply of the process at higher schools of financial and economic profile”. According to the results of these investigations 12 study manuals have been prepared, one of them – “Pedagogical ethics” (the author H.P. Vasianovych) is honoured by the President of the Academy of Pedagogical Sciences of Ukraine as the best scientific methodical works for teachers.
The teachers of the department have possibility to publish their scientific-research works in “Visnyk of Lviv State Academy of Finance: Humanitarian subjects”, whose editor-in-chief is Vasianovych Hryhoriy Petrovych.
Two methodical boards have been formed at the department:
The Board for legal subjects – the head Stukalina Nadiya Tymofijivna, candidate of History, docent;
The Board for social and humanitarian subjects – the head Kopelchak Mykhailo Pavlovych, candidate of Pedagogics, docent.
The department organizes the participation of students in the research, artistic and leisure activities of the Academy.
There are two students' scientific circles at the department. Students' scientific circle in history – the head Sheremeta Oksana Mykhailivna; the circle in the Ukrainian language – the head Khamyliak Olha Josypivna. From September to December 2008 the students of the circle in history worked at such topics: “The sources of the Ukrainian people”, “Galicia-Volyn state”, “Cossack hetmanate”, “The Ukrainian revolution (1917-1920)”.
